ABSTRACT

In this paper I aim to do two things. First, I seek to demonstrate that aspects of ancient Near Eastern civilization endured or resurfaced in early Islamic cultures. Second, I propose a number of hypotheses regarding the means by which these aspects of the ancient Near East were transmitted to the Islamic Near East, despite the intervening temporal gap.

Adam Silverstein studied at the University of Cambridge (Ph.D., 2002) and taught at the universities of Cambridge, Oxford, London, and Bar-Ilan, before joining The Hebrew University in 2021, where he is Professor of Islam and Middle Eastern Studies.
