One of the significant accomplishments of economic analysis over the last forty years has been the understanding that economics agents have access to different information, and that this disparity has profound consequences for the nature of contracts and markets. It must also be recognized however, that the information available to any one agent is in turn altered by exchanges with other agents, and that these exchanges are themselves economic in character (i.e. costly and valuable). These considerations have also become important in designing computer systems that exchange information.
