Li Ling studied for her doctorate under Professor Jin Weinuo, at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing. Her research direction focused on Arts in the Han-Tang Dynasty, with an emphasis on the primary research field of Tibetan Buddhist Arts. She has taught courses on Plastic Art TheoryChinese Arts and Crafts History and Aesthetics. Her doctoral thesis was titled "Research on Iconography of Tibetan Buddhism." After completing her PhD in 2002 Li Ling became affiliated with the National Museum of China. She currently works in the Art Department of the National Museum of China. Li Ling has published ten monographs and translations and more than 50 papers.  Two of her representative books are: The Image of Avalokitesvara in Tibetan Buddhism and Studies in Buddhist Iconography.
