2026-2027 Terms and Conditions for Fellows from Israeli Institutions who are members of a Research Group (RG)
Remuneration
Scholars from Israeli Research Institutions may become Fellows of the IIAS under one of the following arrangements:
- Fellows from Israeli Research institutions, who devote their time entirely to research and participate in Research Group (RG) activities: Such fellows will use their sabbatical months, and their residency at the IIAS will be considered 'FATMA' (פטור מהוראה). For each month of residency under the arrangement of FATMA, the IIAS will provide the Fellow with a monthly research grant of 9,000 NIS (RG Fellow/Individual Fellow) or 12,000 NIS (RG Organizer), which can only be used during the residency period at the IIAS. Additional details regarding the use of these funds will be provided to you at a later date.
- Fellows from Israeli Research institutions, who keep partial teaching duties at their home institution (up to 30% teaching concentrated in one day per week): In such a case, the IIAS will compensate the Fellow’s faculty for the loss of teaching for up to 25,000 NIS per semester of the Fellow’s residency at the IIAS (not applicable to The Hebrew University). This arrangement must be coordinated by the Fellow with his/her home institution (please note that some institutions will not be open to such an arrangement).
- A combination of the first two arrangements (provided that the Fellow’s residency at the IIAS is for 10 months):Please specify which arrangement will take place in the first 5 months, and which in the latter 5 months.
- New researchers (i.e. within seven years after accepting a position at an Israeli academic institution): such fellows will not need to use their sabbatical months. Their salaries and academic benefits will be paid directly to their home institution by the IIAS.
Note: Fellows affiliated with Ben-Gurion University, Tel Aviv University and The Hebrew University will not accumulate sabbatical months during their residency at the IIAS.
Emeriti Fellows from Israeli Institutions may become Fellows of the IIAS under the following arrangement:
Emeriti Fellows at the IIAS will devote their time entirely to research and participation in Research Group activities. As an emeritus, the IIAS will provide each emeritus Fellow with a monthly grant of 3,000 (RG Fellow/Individual Fellow) or 4,000 NIS (RG Organizer), which can only be used during the residency period at the IIAS. Additional details regarding the use of these funds will be provided to you at a later date.
Residency
The IIAS offers leading researchers the opportunity to dedicate themselves fully to research activities and foster their research interest while being unburdened from other obligations.
Fellows are expected to be present at the IIAS five days a week, from Sunday till Thursday (“working days”).
Fellows must participate fully in the work of the Research Group for the entire duration of their period of residence. This participation includes, but is not limited to, spending their working day at the IIAS in order to participate in RG meetings and seminars.
Each Fellow is entitled to leave of absence of up to two working days for every month of his/her period of residence. These days include absences for personal and medical reasons as well as absences to fulfil professional obligations not related to the RG (including participation in conferences). All expenses for these personal, medical and external professional obligations are the financial responsibility of the Fellow and will not be reimbursed by the IIAS.
The Fellow must report any absence from the IIAS as soon as possible. Special leaves of absence must be approved by the IIAS in advance, and will be granted on an individual basis. Unapproved absences will result in deductions from the Fellow’s monthly stipend.
Fellows are not allowed to work in Israel or abroad in any position outside their IIAS Fellowship.
Participation in IIAS Activities
During the period of residency, Fellows must participate in all of their Research Group (RG) activities and IIAS events (organized by the IIAS).
Daily Lunch
Participation in the daily light lunch at the IIAS is an essential element of communal life at the IIAS. Dairy and vegetarian food is served Sunday through Thursday, between 12:30-13:30, at a subsidized monthly rate.
Research Activity
The Fellow will report to the IIAS Director about his/her research activity, presenting a final report at the end of residency.
The academic results of the research conducted at the IIAS remain the full property of the Fellows, and the IIAS has no claims to IP on the research results. Fellows are however expected to acknowledge the support of the IIAS in any publication that matured from their time at the IIAS. Any scholarly books or publications that are a result of the RG activities or RG Fellows’ collaborations must acknowledge the IIAS and contain the following sentence:
“The research for this book/article/other was conducted at the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies, as part of the Research Group [insert name of RG] [give residency year in brackets].”
When presenting a talk at another institute while in residence at the IIAS, the Fellow is kindly requested to mention their current status as an IIAS Resident Fellow. PowerPoint presentations should prominently feature the IIAS logo.
Resources
Fellows will receive a HUJI visitor’s card, which serves as a means of identification on HUJI campuses, provides access to the various libraries on HUJI campuses, and is required for membership in HUJI’s Faculty Club, the Cosell Sports Center (which offers a membership for IIAS Fellows at a reduced rate) and other HUJI facilities.
Fellows will receive an office, equipped with a desktop computer, printer connection, wire telephone, bookshelf and basic office supplies.
