The origin of galaxies is fundamental for understanding our Universe. Much progress has been made in recent years, both observationally and theoretically with the aid of advanced simulations, but many questions remain deeply puzzling. Major developments are expected as cutting-edge observations attempt to probe galaxy formation at its most active phase, during the first few billion years of cosmological history. In parallel, major advancements in theory and simulations make it possible to work out reliable quantitative predictions that explore galaxy dynamics, the physics of star formation and feedback, and massive black holes. These exciting developments will be the focus of the upcoming School.
