Banach spaces are the main objects of functional analysis which in turn is a framework for much of modern mathematical analysis. By its nature, Banach space theory is rather eclectic, both with regard to the problems posed and to the methods applied. It is intertwined with many other fields of mathematics, such as convexity, combinatorics, high-dimensional probability, finite metric spaces, harmonic analysis, non-linear functional analysis, differentiability theory etc.

Since the 1950s, Jerusalem has been one of the most important centres of Banach space theory. This is due mainly to two people, Professors Aryeh Dvoretzky and Joram Lindenstrauss, of The Hebrew University. In 1962, Lindenstrass obtained his PhD under Dvoretzky and he quickly became one of the leading researchers in the field. In 1970, he was invited to give a lecture at ICM. From 1986, Lindenstrass was a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences, and in 1981 he received the Israel Prize. He mentored 13 PhD students.

Professor Joram Lindenstrauss passed away on April 29, 2012, and was a very active researcher until his death. This conference will be a tribute to his memory, covering topics that were dealt with by Lindenstrauss in his influential, lifelong research.
