IIAS-ISF Conference
ORGANIZERS:
Elisheva Baumgarten, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Judah D. Galinsky, Bar-Ilan University
This conference will examine two central issues. The first is a basic problem that has often troubled scholars. Since almost all medieval texts that have reached us were authored by the learned, the educated elites, how should one use these texts (as well as other findings from the past such as objects, illuminations and archaeology) to learn about those who were not part of the elites? Focusing on medieval northern Europe during the High Middle Ages (11th-14th centuries), the speakers will present various approaches to contend with this difficulty. The second theme to be explored throughout deals with the similarities (and the differences) between medieval Jewish and Christian societies.
