The theme of the conference is identical to the theme of the research group, namely, the legitimation of criminal law. The discussed themes will include: moral panics (leading to harsh sentencing), the legitimacy of under-enforcement, mechanisms to correct wrongful convictions, the justifiability of taking into account retributive considerationsin determining the sentence, multiculturalism (the cultural defence), republican and communitarian approaches to sentencing, and others.
