Over the past several years, the concept of jihad in modern Islamic discourse has captured the lion's share of interest and attention in the research literature, with barely any deliberation on the theme of sacrifice and death. Scholars who did address this issue focused mainly on "suicide" attacks, a new phenomenon of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The three-day conference aims to fill this gap in the extant literature on the evolving notion of martyrdom in modern Islam. Topics to be discussed include martyrdom and social networks, martyrdom and gender relations, violence and ethics, and historical memory and commemoration.
