"Triangulating Towards Socrates: The Socratic Circle and Its Aftermath" Research Group Conference

Of the many students of Socrates who produced literary works, only those of Plato and Xenophon have come down to us as more than a collection of fragments. Building on recent work in the theory of emotions, this project brings together scholars from a broad spectrum of approaches to investigate the portrait of emotions in the work of Xenophon. To what extent are emotions universal or culturally specific? How far can they be influenced by the application of reason and persuasion? What principles can determine what emotions are preferable and how to inculcate them? By addressing questions like these, the papers presented in this conference will help illuminate the role of the Socratic circle in producing a conception of emotions that, though the later systemization of Aristotle, would influence western thought for many generations.
