Daniel R. Schwartz of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Landau Prize for Science and Arts, granted by the National Lottery, in the field of Jewish history.
This award recognizes his unparalleled and extensive contributions to the study of Jewish history during the Hellenistic-Roman period.
Prof. Schwartz, who participated in the IIAS research group 'Meeting of Cultures in the Hellenistic Roman World', has authored 22 books and over 200 articles, many of which are now considered classics in their field. His scholarship has reshaped contemporary research on ancient Jewish texts, key historical figures, and significant events within Jewish society and its surrounding environment, setting new standards for modern scholarship.
In addition to his work on ancient Jewish history, Prof. Schwartz has conducted groundbreaking research on 19th and 20th-century German-Jewish historiography, with a focus on the Wissenschaft des Judentums movement. His research over the past four decades has been characterized by continuous methodological innovation, aligning with developments in the study of history, including explorations of identity formation and narrative construction.
Among his many contributions, Prof. Schwartz has also provided annotated translations and critical introductions to canonical texts of the period, further enhancing the field’s understanding of these historical sources.
