Jan Grabowski's Essay in Jewish Quarterly

7 July, 2024
Jan Grabowski's Essay in Jewish Quarterly

Jan Grabowski, a fellow at IIAS during the 2024 academic year, is publishing an important essay for the forthcoming issue of The Jewish Quarterly (JQ257 - August 2024): "Whitewash: Poland and the Jews," addresses the ongoing challenges Poland faces in acknowledging its role in the Holocaust.

In his essay, Grabowski examines how various Polish institutions, including the government, museums, and schools, have promoted a narrative of Polish innocence during the Holocaust. He also shares his personal experiences with defamation and legal challenges for questioning Poland's historical narrative. The essay highlights the broader consequences of these historical distortions, which affect the understanding of the Holocaust worldwide.

Jan Grabowski is a history professor at the University of Ottawa. He has authored several books, including "Rescue for Money" and "Hunt for the Jews," which won the Yad Vashem International Book Prize. His latest book is "On Duty: The Role of the Polish Blue and Criminal Police in the Holocaust." Grabowski and his co-editor Barbara Engelking were sued in Poland for their book "Night Without End," which explores Polish collaboration with the Nazis.
