The IIAS is proud to announce that Noga Alon has been honored with the prestigious 2024 Wolf Prize in Mathematics. Alon shares the Wolf Prize with Adi Shamir of the Weizmann Institute of Science for their pioneering contributions to mathematical cryptography, combinatorics, and the theory of computer science.
Alon is recognized as one of the most prolific mathematicians worldwide, with over 850 publications spanning various fields, including biology, economics, and neuroscience. His profound impact on discrete mathematics and related areas has been acknowledged by the Wolf Prize citation, which highlights his innovative techniques in combinatorics, graph theory, and theoretical computer science.
Alon's connection to IIAS is notable, having taught at numerous "Midrasha Mathematicae" - advanced schools in mathematics here, further enriching our academic community. As a 2001 IIAS Bruno Memorial Award laureate, we are especially proud to have recognized his potential early on. The Bruno Memorial Award seeks to identify and honor "outstanding Israeli young scholars who possess the leadership to impact academic life in Israel and abroad." Alon's receipt of the Wolf Prize underscores the enduring significance of combinatorics and its applications in modern mathematics, confirming that our early faith in his promise was well-founded.
The Wolf Prize, awarded annually since 1978, celebrates significant contributions to science and the arts. Noga Alon joins a list of Wolf Prize laureates, many of whom have subsequently received Nobel Prizes. The IIAS community extends its heartfelt congratulations to Professor Alon on this well-deserved recognition.
