This workshop will work toward the development of a theory that elucidates the circumstances and mechanisms of cultural brokerage in premodern Islamic history. It is concerned with spaces and moments that were especially favorable to cultural brokerage. Participants will present case studies through which we will examine the background of cultural changes that resulted from such brokerage. In particular, presentations will address the question of whether certain constellations of historical factors can be identified as distinctive of cultural brokerage in the Islamic world.
