Professor Aryeh Dvoretzky was the founder and first Academic Director of the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies. He passed away in 2008.

At The Hebrew University, Dvoretzky was Dean of the Faculty of Science and a Vice-President. He is best known for his work in functional analysis, statistics and probability. He received the Israel Prize for Exact Sciences in 1973. Later he was elected President of the Weizmann Institute of Science, and President of the Israel Academy of Sciences, of which he was one of the founding members.

Dvoretzky was very active and influential in public life, serving as Chief Scientist for the Ministry of Defense, chairing many committees, and rendering official and unofficial advice. He was a member of the editorial board of the Israel Journal of Mathematics since its foundation in 1963, and of its predecessor, the Bulletin of the Research Council of Israel.
