Benjamin Sommer is a professor of Bible and Ancient Semitic Languages at the Jewish Theological Seminary. His research focuses on the history of the Israelite religion, biblical theology, Pentateuch, Psalms, and the relationships between biblical thought and later Jewish theology. His book, The Bodies of God and the World of Ancient Israel (2009) received the Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion in 2010 from the American Academy of Religion.
