The subjects of economics and politics were once inseparable, but about a century ago the two fields diverged. In recent years they have been reunited. Therefore, scholars have been examining why the political process affects economic outcomes, as well as how economic imperatives influence politics. The literature of political economy is rich in both positive and normative directions.
