Open Call for IIAS - NLI Individual Fellowship

THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF ISRAEL and the ISRAEL INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDIES at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (IIAS) invite established scholars with tenured positions in an academic/research institution outside Israel to submit proposals for joint individual fellowship at both institutions for the 2027-2028 academic year.
Topics may cover Jewish studies, Israel studies, Islam and Middle Eastern studies, Music, and General Humanities; preference will be given to research projects that make use of the library’s special collections. Fellows will share their time between the neighboring NLI and IIAS in Jerusalem. They will benefit from the NLI’s unparalleled collections, the professional knowledge of its staff, and its dynamic academic environment. The IIAS will provide fellows with a nurturing and stimulating academic environment, as well as administrative support. Fellows will receive a generous fellowship and subsidized accommodation. It is our expectation that the synergy between the two institutions will foster innovative and original research, contributing meaningfully to the international scholarly community.
Eligibility
Scholars must have a tenured position within an academic research institution outside Israel. This fellowship is not open for postdoctoral researchers.
Period of Residence
The IIAS and NLI academic year runs from September 1 to June 30.
Residencies are available for 10 months or 5 months and the proposal should contain the requested period of residency according to the following options:
- A 10-month residency starting September 1, 2027
- A 5-month residency beginning September 1, 2027 or February 1, 2028
Application Deadline
The online system will be open for submission on December 10, 2025.
The deadline for application submission is February 27th, 2026.
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
The joint NLI and IIAS Academic Committee will announce its decisions regarding the selected proposals within seven months of the submission deadline.

Open Call for Challenges to Democracy Fellowship Spring 2027

THE ISRAEL INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDIES at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (IIAS) invites established scholars with tenured position in an academic/research institution from Israel and abroad to submit proposals for a fellowship at the IIAS for the Spring semester of 2028 as part of the Challenges to Democracy Research Group .
The first part of the five-year project “Challenges to Democracy” focuses on the analysis and critique of “illiberal democracies” which have become the main contender for establishing an alternative to liberal democracies as the leading form of political organization. Fellows will spend their residency at the IIAS, located at the Edmond J. Safra Givat Ram campus of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The IIAS provides fellows with a nurturing and stimulating academic environment, as well as administrative support. Fellows from abroad receive a generous fellowship and subsidised accommodation.
Scholars may be from Israel or abroad and must have a tenured position within an academic research institution. Former fellows may apply for an individual fellowship once 10 years have elapsed from the end of their previous term to the beginning of the academic year of their fellowship. This fellowship is not open for postdoctoral researchers.
Period of Residence
Proposals may be submitted for a five-month residency starting February 1, 2027 until June 30, 2027.
Application Deadline and Notification
The online system will open for submission on September 1, 2025. The deadline for application submission is December 1, 2025. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

In addition to the above, the applicant should provide the following documents:

Letter of Intent (up to 1000 words): The letter should include a description of the candidate’s own project, and justification on how it relates to the topic of Challenges to Democracy.

The IIAS Academic Committee announces its decisions regarding the selected proposals within seven months of the submission deadline.
